Every cropping season, the complaints follow the same pattern. A farmer near the forest edge finds a maize field torn up overnight. A user group meeting turns into a debate about how many wild boar are living in the community forest this year, and whether that number is going up. Someone always has a guess. Nobody has ever actually measured it.
I wrote Nepal's first field-level guideline for surveying wild boar populations, built specifically for the people who have to produce that number: rangers, forest officers, protected area staff, and trained members of community forest user groups.
Why this animal is so hard to count
Wild boar break every shortcut a field team might reach for. They move mostly at night and rest under thick cover through the day, so a daylight walk-through misses most of the population. No two animals look different enough to identify from a photograph, the way a tiger's stripes or a leopard's rosettes can be read individually. They travel in family groups of variable size rather than alone, which means a single sighting can be one animal or eight. And their diggings are routinely mistaken for those of porcupines, bears, or even cattle, which quietly corrupts any tally built on sign alone.
None of that means the animal can't be counted. It means it can't be counted by eye, and any number that claims otherwise should be treated with suspicion.
Eleven methods, one decision key
Rather than prescribing a single technique, the guideline lays out eleven survey methods and a decision key to choose between them, based on what equipment, budget, and skills an office actually has.
Four rely on camera traps set out on a grid, converting trigger rates or the time animals spend in view into a density estimate. Three put trained observers in the field directly: walking transects at night with a thermal scope or spotlight, flying a thermal drone over open terrain, or organising a drive count across a bounded block with beaters and stationary counters. One uses genetics, matching individuals from DNA in collected dung across two sampling sessions. One draws on records that already exist wherever licensed hunting is underway. And two produce a relative index or an occupancy map rather than a density figure at all, which is often what's actually needed when the real question is where the animals are rather than exactly how many.
Every method section is written the same way: what it needs, how to run it step by step, the formula behind it, a worked example with real arithmetic, and the mistakes that most often wreck the result in practice. Datasheets for every method are included as templates ready to photocopy and carry into the field.
A number without a range isn't a result
The guideline is firm on one point throughout: a density figure reported on its own, without some sense of how uncertain it is, isn't something a forest office should publish. Camera-based estimates for wild boar typically carry a fairly wide margin of error, wide enough to say confidently whether an area holds a lot of animals or a little, but not wide enough to catch a small year-on-year change. So every survey is also asked to run a simple rooting and sign index alongside whatever primary method it uses. It costs almost nothing, any trained volunteer can do it, and repeated in the same plots every year, it's often what actually reveals a trend before an expensive density survey would.
The guideline also builds in field safety and African swine fever biosecurity procedures for survey teams, given the disease's confirmed presence in wild boar in Nepal.
What it's for, and what it isn't
This is deliberately a survey guideline and nothing more. It tells a team how to measure a population and how to report it honestly. It does not recommend culling, compensation, fencing, or any other management response. Those decisions sit elsewhere, with the people who actually hold that authority, informed by numbers a survey like this can now actually supply.
