Snake Sighting in Phungling, Taplejung

The species appears to be a Checkered Keelback (Xenochrophis piscator), locally known in Nepali as "पानी साँप". This non-venomous water snake is commonly found in wetlands, rice fields, and near water sources. Despite its intimidating look, it poses no harm to humans and plays an important ecological role by controlling amphibian and fish populations.

Conservation Note:
Wild snakes like this are often misunderstood. Promoting awareness about non-venomous species helps reduce unnecessary killings and contributes to local biodiversity conservation.

हालै फुङ्लिङ क्षेत्रमा देखिएको र खिचिएको यो साँपलाई अवलोकन गर्दा जालीदार सर्प (Checkered Keelback – Xenochrophis piscator) जस्तो देखिन्छ। यसलाई स्थानीय भाषामा प्रायः "पानी साँप" भनेर चिनिन्छ। यो विषालु नभएको साँप हो र सामान्यतः खेत, खोल्सा, पोखरी तथा अन्य जलस्रोत नजिक पाइन्छ।

प्राकृतिक महत्व:
यो साँपले घाँसफुस, भ्यागुता तथा माछा खाएर जैविक सन्तुलनमा सहयोग गर्छ। मान्छेलाई कुनै हानि नगर्ने यो प्रजातिको हत्या गर्नु अनावश्यक छ। यसबारे सही जानकारी र जनचेतना फैलाउँदा जैविक विविधताको संरक्षणमा ठूलो सहयोग पुग्छ।
